Hennepin County Fishing Reports
Hennepin County has some of the best fishing lakes in the state. There are no arguments with that one, and every year someone out catches the last record breaker in what ever particular body of water it may be, and there are a lot of bodies of water that the county has to offer.
Where can I fish from shore? What lakes have public docks, I can fish from? In the list of lakes below, we'll include locations for shore fishing, dock fishing, pier fishing, and public boat launches. Included also, will be if a city, or county park is on the lake. Some lakes will have a personal fishing reports added, if deemed beneficial to the public, or information on the health of the lake, fish survey opinions, restrictions, or consumption warnings.
We'll be adding more information, and the locations of the Hennepin County Bait Stores, with detailed information to zero in on the lake you plan fishing. Local bait stores are also a great source of information as well.
Always check with the DNR (Department Of Natural Resources) for the latest fishing regulations. Not every body of water in Minnesota has the same regulations, so make sure and check. The link is provided below for the DNR Search Box, and is very friendly to use. You'll have the answer if the particular lake you're interested in, has any restriction a person should be aware of.

Always check the weather before heading out to the lake. This goes for shore fishing as well. Play it safe, and play it smart!

Ardmore Lake |
Arrowhead Lake |
Ardmore Lake is a small body of water consisting of 13 acres, and a depth of 12 feet. Extremely small in size, and should just be considered a pond for wild life. Unaware of any shore fishing, or public access. The lake is located north of Maple Plain, just off CR 19.

Boundary Creek PondBoundary Creek Pond is only 11 acres in size, and 8 feet deep. Perhaps a fun place to bring the kids fishing, which it was intended for in it's creation. This lake is subject to winter kill-off, and is stocked yearly for bluegill, and black crappie. There very well could be some keepers in this lake, but things change yearly, depending on the harshness of each winter. The lake is located in/near Osseo (CLICK HERE FOR DIRECTIONS)

Brownie Lake is 10 acres in size, and has a depth of 47 feet. I always remembered this lake being bigger as a kid. The lake is full of small sunfish, and crappies. To small to fillet with a knife, but enjoyable to catch none the less. (CLICK HERE FOR DIRECTIONS)

Bush Lake
Bush Lake is 171 acres in size, and has a depth of 28 feet. This is a good northern, and bass lake. The panfish are small, and other species in the lake are just not worth mentioning. You'll find a public access on the west side of the lake, of Bush Lake Road. (CLICK HERE FOR DIRECTIONS)

Cedar Lake
Cedar Lake is 163 acres in size, and 51 feet in depth. The sunfish are relatively small in size, but there are a few nice sized crappies, and northerns in the lake. I remember fishing this lake as a kid, back in the 70's. Plenty of shore fishing, and there is a public access , and many designated spots to carry in a canoe. For more information, go to the DNR FISH SURVEY / ACCESS INFORMATION.

Crystal Lake
Crystal Lake is 79 acres in size, and 39 feet in depth. This is primarily a panfish lake, but unfortunately they are small in size. The has been stocked with tiger muskie and there are a few big ones lurking about. There are parks on both ends of the lake, with ample shore fishing, and pier fishing. The public access is located on the south end of Crystal Lake in Terrace Lakeview Park.

Eagle Lake
Eagle Lake is 296 acres in size, with a depth of 34 feet. There has been some nice panfish taken out of this lake over the years. The survey kind of says otherwise, but they are there. Nice population of northern, and walleye too. You'll find shore fishing at Northeast bay at outlet, just off Magda Dr. (CLICK HERE FOR DIRECTIONS)

Forest Lake
Forest Lake is 90 acres in size, and 42 feet deep. Only access to the lake, is through Lake Minnetonka itself with a boat via a waterway. So what's in Minnetonka, makes it's way there, and vice versa. The last survey conducted was 40 years ago. Lots of panfish in there, and some keepers.

Glen Lake is 60 acres in size, with a depth of 20 feet. There might be a few decent size northerns in this lake, but don't expect much else. The panfish are the size of children's potato chips. a great lake to bring a child fishing for his first time. Problem is, not sure if shore fishing is even possible there. There is a spot you can walk out for ice fishing, mentioned on the DNR SURVEY link below.

Half Moon Lake is 33 acres in size, with a depth of 25 feet. This is a lake lake that is carry in only, so if you have a canoe, you can get access through Bakers Park Reserve, that Borders the west side of the lake. Another access is only available in winter, through a cross country ski trail that goes through a golf course nearby. You just don't know what you're going to catch in this lake, or it's size. Some huge northerns in the lake, and walleye as well. Not many per say, but wall mounters. As far as for the sunfish, and crappie, could be on the smaller size, but there are some big crappies in there. There is a fishing pier on the west side of the lake. Small lakes concern a lot of us in the county, due to added pressure. Lakes with limited access, seem to fair better long term in the true potential of the lake, but unfortunately things change.

Haughey Lake
Haughey Lake is 53 acres in size, and 23 feet in depth. Little is known about this lake, and whether it can be even fished by shore. It's full of panfish, but they were very small in size, but conflicting show that 20 years ago, they were keeper size fish. So between now, an then, and whatever pressure the lake has received, is the million dollar question.

Holy Name Lake is 70 acres in size, with a depth of just 7 feet deep. One lake with no fishing reports ever sent in, and the last netting the DNR performed back in 1994, shows only bullheads in the lake. The lake is subject to winter kill, and has obviously been restocked from time, to time. Present condition of the lake is unknown. There is a lake access owned by the city of Medina, on the south side of the lake.

Lake Independence is 832 acres in size, and has a depth of 58 feet. This is a big time recreational lake, but also a big time fishing lake. Great fishing for panfish, bass, and walleye. Record sized northern , and muskie as well. There is shore, and pier fishing, and you're at the park. So pack a lunch. You'll find boat access in Baker Park.

Little Long Lake
Little Long Lake is 69 acres in size, and 76 feet in depth. There are a few big northerns in this lake, and not much else worth discussing. The lake has been stocked with trout, but no words as of yet on how successful that's been. The stocking for Rainbow trout resumed in 2012, and since then no fish survey has taken place, at least to my knowledge. No bigger than a 10HP motor can be used in this lake. Unaware if there is any shore fishing there.

Long Lake
Long Lake is 284 acres in size, with a depth of 33 feet. This is an interesting lake, and might be worth a try. Quite a few nice walleye in the lake, and ample crappies of modest size. A few nice bluegills as well. With the recent DNR fish survey, it's bound to catch your attention. You'll find a public access owned by the city located on the west shore, at the end of Lake Street in the city of Long Lake.

Medicine Lake
Medicine Lake is 925 acres in size, and 49 feet in depth. I think many of us have been to this lake as a kid, at one time or another. There are a lot of nice fish in this lake, including the northerns, walleye, and panfish. We've had many reports of the nice sized crappies from those ice fishing the lake, and rumors lave been floating around since the 70's of the giant northerns the lake holds. Clifton E. French Regional Park borders the northwest portion of the lake, and provides the only public boat launch during the open-water season. A fee is charged for parking boat trailer-vehicle combinations. Harty's Boat-works, located on the east side of the lake, rents boats and provides drive-on wintertime access. The regional park does have piers, and shore fishing spots.

Mitchell Lake
Mitchell Lake is 113 acres in size, with a depth of 19 feet. For one of the smaller size lakes in the county, this lake hold some huge northerns. For some years now they have been stocking it with walleye fingerlings. There are some big walleye in the lake as well, with ample panfish, but they are on the small size. There is a city owned boat access, that only during park hours, (Eden Prairie; Miller Park) Located on the south east side of the lake, off shoreline Dr.

Lake Nokomis is 201 acres in size, and has a depth of 33 feet. One regulation I know of is Muskellunge, and Tiger Muskellunge must be 40 inches in length to keep. There are a few nice northerns in the lake, and walleye. The panfish tend to be on the small side though. They have regularly been stocking the lake every other year for quite some time now with walleye, and muskellunge. You'll find a boat ramp with parking on the west side of the lake, off County Rd. 62. Arrowhead Lake is another small body of water consisting of 22 acres, with a depth of 22 feet. Full of small bullheads, and potato chip sized green sunfish. The lake freezes out regularly. There is a access to the lake on it's east side, but unaware of it's location. Located in Edina off 169. Considered a good minnow pond, and nothing more.

Lake Calhoun aka Bde Maka Ska
Lake Bde Maka Ska is 419 acres in size, and 82 feet in depth. This is a recreational lake, and has been enjoyed by many over the years. There are some nice northerns, and walleye in the lake, but the panfish tend to be small. Ample shore fishing, and a public access.

Christmas Lake
Christmas Lake is 267 acres in size, and has a depth of 87 feet. There are some nice bass, and northerns in the lake. I have fished the lake a few times, and the panfish are small. Fish Lake
Fish Lake is 237 acres in size, and has a depth of 49 feet. I've never read more of a disappointing survey report on the fish in that lake. Size especially, and quantity as well. There were ample sunfish in the lake, at the time of the 2014 survey they performed. Perhaps they have grown larger since then. Contact the Three Rivers Park District for questions. Boat access is located on the south side of the lake, off Fish Lake Drive North Rd. Fees may apply fishing there.

Gleason Lake
Gleason Lake is 142 acres in size, an 16 feet in depth. This sounds like a fun little lake. It's off the Luce Line Trail, and Red Rock Trail on the north side of the lake. Carry in a canoe, or shore fishing only. It's full of panfish, a few might be keepers, due to the fact the fish survey the DNR did was 22 some years ago. Fun lake if you want to grab your bike, portable fishing pole, and pack a lunch.

Hafften Lake
Hafften Lake is 36 acres in size, and 44 feet deep. This is a very unique lake for it's small size, and sticks out from from the rest of the lakes in the county that are small in size. The panfish are somewhat keep-able, and the population is not bad. The last netting/ trap survey was 15 years ago, and on paper this lake looks like it has some potential, if your goal is a fish dinner for supper. Things could have changed since then, and fishing pressure is one of them. There is a boat access on the south east side of the lake, owned by Greenfield Township.

Lake Harriet is 341 acres in size, and has a depth of 87 feet. Plenty of shore fishing, an a couple of fishing piers on the lake as well. Canoe rental, and free parking if you can find a spot. Lake Hiawatha
Lake Hiawatha is 52 acres in size, and 33 feet in depth. It's full of panfish, and a few big northerns. However, the panfish seem to be on the small end. You'll find a little of everything in the lake. the only access known, is near the beach on the south end of the lake.

Hyland Lake
Hyland Lake is 83 acres in size, with a depth of 12 feet. This is a great bass lake, not to mention some nice walleye swimming around in there. The pan fish are a tad on the small size. Lone Lake
Lone Lake is 16 acres in size, and has a depth of 27 feet. This lake is best left as a minnow pond, or a mosquito hatchery. It serves more purpose, than wetting a line in this lake. Small bullheads, and tiny sunfish is what you could expect fishing this lake. unaware of any shore fishing, but possible to land a boat there. Not a maintained landing according to the DNR.

Lost Lake is 22 acres in size, with a depth of just 6 feet. The lake could be called "lost fish". The last DNR survey back in the late 70's, only pulled 1 sunfish up, and not a snail more. Nothing else known about the lake at this time.

Lydiard Lake is 12 acres in size, with a depth of 52 feet, which is unusual for a lake that size in the county. The DNR fish survey is not very impressive, and the two attempts by the public to replenish the fish population through stocking, have apparently failed with no success. There may be a few nice fish in the lake, but not many. No shore fishing, or boat access known at this time.

Lake Minnetonka is 14, 205 acres in size, and 113 feet in depth. This is the largest lake in Hennepin County, which has probably created most of the fishing reports, than all the other lakes in the county combined. The lake is full of fish, and full of spots to fish. Information is provided below at the DNR link, where you'll find boat access locations. There are many shore fishing spots on Lake Minnetonka, and the best way to locate them is information from a local bait-store, word of mouth, or scouting around the lake yourself. As a child, I fished the lake 100's of times, and boy things have changed since all the development that has taken place. In the 60's, and early 70's many dock owners let you fish from them. Some didn't mind, and some did, but over time that was put an end to. It's been 30 years since I have fished the lake, and wish I could share some shore spots that I recall. I remember the Narrows, Mike's Hole, and Turtle Hole..I believe they have public docks provided by the DNR for people to fish. You can also call the DNR, and ask them on shore fishing locations. They may be able to help. I will post shore fishing spots when more reports come in.
